The oldest marathon in Europe is a true source of inspiration.
Each year it has brought something exceptional, original, and unique
with it. If we leaf through the annals of the Kosice Peace Marathon ,
a number of legends cannot be overlooked. Today young people follow in
their footsteps, and their efforts is rewarded in the final of the
Junior relay-race 42 X 1 km, always held at the same time as the races.
A project has been planned for the years 2006-2011, its leading figure
is Argentinian marathon hero Juan Carlos Zabala, celebrated thanks to
his matchless victory in Kosice in 1931, and also his olympic victory
in Los Angeles a year later. This year will be a year of tribute to
Pavol Kantorek, olympic runner and winner of Fukuoka, as well as three-time
champion of the Kosice Marathon, who for the first time was `decorated`
in Kosice 50 years ago. And just now by another „50th“ project in 2011
we will close the year in a very symbolic way. Then it will be 50 years
since the victiories of ethiopian legend Abebe Bikila, winner of the
olympic marathons in Rome and Tokyo. So the youth in motion over a
five year period reminds the wider public of the lives, destinies,
and victories of the legends of Kosice and the world marathon scene.
