Participation of physically disabled athletes has a
quite long tradition in Kosice. For the first time
they appeared in the field of racers after the course
has changed to the city route, and there, as in the rest
of the world, they gained great support from the crowd,
as well as the other competing athletes.
Daniel Kukla – multiple winner and competitor
from eastern Slovakia is perhaps the one that stands out most –
he has succeeded in Kosice as well as on others international events.
Advances are still being made, and now alongside the classic wheelchair
participants we can see also the so-called handbikers, who use their
hands to drive a typical bicycle gears. Like the skaters,
these disabled athletes take on a 20 kilometer course,
and their start just ahead of the main field is the proper singal
for everyone lining the route to not to be shy with their applause.
